The Hannibal Sr. Legion baseball team eked out a 6-5 win over New Haven in eight innings Thursday at the Missouri District 9 Tournament.

The Hannibal Post 55 Sr. Legion baseball team kept its season alive with late theatrics Thursday night.

Hannibal, the No. 7 seed, overcame a one-run deficit to sixth-seeded New Haven to force extra innings in its first game of the loser's bracket at the Missouri District 9 Tournament.

Post 55 eked out a 6-5 victory in eight innings.

John Trenhaile hit the game-winning RBI groundout to score Chad Smith in the top of the eighth.

Payton Phillips earned the win for Post 55 with three scoreless innings to end the contest. He didn't allow a hit.

Hannibal led 4-1 going to the third, but New Haven scratched across three unearned runs in the fourth to even the game.

New Haven tacked on another tally in the fifth.

Trevor Wade singled and scored for Hannibal in the sixth to knot the score.

After Post 55 took the lead in the eighth, New Haven moved a runner to third base in the bottom of frame but got caught in a rundown between third and home for the final out.

Hannibal was on the losing end of a tight game Wednesday, suffering a 4-3 loss to No. 2 Elsberry in its tourney opener.

Post 55 held a 3-2 lead entering the seventh before allowing a pair of unearned runs.

Hannibal posted eight hits in the loss to Elsberry's four.

“We played probably one of our best games of the year and had them beat but couldn't finish it off,” Hannibal manager Randy Trenhaile said.

Hannibal is scheduled to play No. 1 seed Washington on Friday night.
