The Hannibal Hurricanes churned to victory at the Hannibal YMCA in their first River Country Summer Swim League meet of the season.

The Hannibal Hurricanes churned to victory Monday evening at the Hannibal YMCA in their first River Country Summer Swim League meet of the season.

Hannibal scored 2,088 points to squeeze past the Pike County Swim Team (1,731) and the Adair Swim Association (1,162).

Leading the way for the Hurricanes was 8-year-old Lydia Campbell, who swam 100 percent individual and relay PRs, improving an average of 13 percent across her five races.

Campbell dropped five seconds in her leg of the 100 free relay (22.66), 12 seconds in her 25 fly (27.51), and four seconds in the girls 7-8 50 free, which she won in 47.59.

Twelve-year-old Andie Lowney won the Hurricane Gargantuan Swim Award for lopping off 16 seconds in her 100 individual medley (94.89).

Eleven-year-old Eric Forney secured the RelayBig Award with major improvements in the 200 medley (he swam the free leg in 35.60) and freestyle (where he also split a 35.60) relays.

The Hurricanes will offer free tryouts at the YMCA pool at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 28. No advance registration or YMCA membership are required. Tryout swimmers should bring a swim suit and goggles and be able to swim 25 yards (one length of the pool) in freestyle and in backstroke.
