The Hannibal Hurricanes swim team placed 24th of 46 squads at the Southwest Age Group Regional Championships in Fresno, California.
The Hannibal Hurricanes swim team placed 24th of 46 squads at the Southwest Age Group Regional Championships in Fresno, California on March 23-26.
The meet drew over 600 swimmers from California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Hawaii and Missouri.
Earning Hurricane Swimmer of the Meet honors was 11-year-old Madelyn Johnson, who scored points (top 10) in all seven of her events in her respective age bracket, including bronze-medal finishes in the 400 individual medley (5:05.64, 10-second drop) and the 500 freestyle (5:36.86, four-second drop), the latter a USA Swimming AAA qualifying time.
She also established personal records in the 100 IM (1:09.42) and 200 free (2:07.26).
Setting team records for the Hurricanes were Olivia Johnson and Ainsley Bennett.
Johnson earned the girls 9-10 100 breaststroke (1:23.33) record with a seventh-place finish and added seventh-place finishes in the 50 (34.20) and 100 (1:15.52) backstrokes and the 200 IM (2:40.97).
Bennett smashed the girls 13-14 team record in the 200 butterfly in her preliminary heat, besting the mark by four seconds to finish in 2:21.87 and then by another four seconds in the finals in 2:17.15, meeting the USA Swimming AA time standard. She also scored in four other races, including fifth in the 200 back (2:17.65), her highest finish of the meet.
Ten-year-old Hurricanes Abby Lewton and Nora Wiley also contributed to the team point total.
Lewton scored in five events, including fifth-place finishes in the 50 (33.68) and 100 (1:14.07) backstrokes and the 200 IM (2:39.19), the last a PR.
Wiley finished eighth in the 100 IM (1:16.23) and ninth in the 100 back (1:15.56) and set a PR in the 100 fly (1:13.21).
The Hurricanes spring/summer season begins Monday, April 2. Free tryouts are offered at the YMCA pool on Monday, April 2 at 6 p.m.; Wednesday, April 4 at 6 p.m.; and Saturday, April 7 at 10:30 a.m.
No advance registration or YMCA membership are required.
Tryout swimmers should bring a swim suit and goggles and be able to swim 25 yards (one length of the pool) in freestyle and in backstroke.
