The Hannibal boys basketball team won its eighth straight NCMC game with a 53-39 victory at Moberly on Friday night.

The Hannibal boys basketball team continued its North Central Missouri Conference winning streak with a 53-39 victory at Moberly on Friday night.

Hannibal (13-8, 8-1 NCMC) made 11 of 14 free throws in the final period to secure its eighth straight conference win.

Junior playmaker Dezi Jones paved the way for the Pirates with 23 points, tying the program's individual single-season scoring record of 602.

Hannibal held the hosts without a field goal in the second quarter but led just 17-16 at halftime in the defensive battle.

Moberly's 39 points were its lowest output in a home game all season.

“Even though we were not shooting the ball like normal, the guys still kept trying on the defensive end,” Hannibal coach Marty Hull said. “Our rotations were still solid. I was really pleased we didn't let our offensive woes affect our defense.”

Wyatt Waelder and Danny Colborn took turns guarding Moberly standout Braedan Wetrich, keeping him in check except for a trio of threes in the third quarter that clawed the Spartans to within 32-28 entering the fourth.

Wetrich failed to score another field goal the rest of the way.

“Our defense was stellar tonight again,” Hull said. “Neither Wyatt or Danny scored a whole bunch, but when you can guard a kid as well as they did, it's just awesome and uplifting to the team.”

Waelder finished with seven points. Evan Sanders scored six points, while Adreke Brumbaugh, John Trenhaile and Preston Bennett each had four a piece.

Hannibal remains in second place in the NCMC behind Fulton, which improved to 8-0 in conference with a 57-54 win over Kirksville on Friday.
