The Hannibal girls basketball team rallied in the third quarter Monday but couldn't overcome Mexico in a 59-33 loss.
The Hannibal girls basketball team launched a comeback to start the second half Monday against Mexico in the quarterfinals of the Warrenton Tournament.
Abby Baumann made a jump shot from the short corner to cap a 7-0 run for the Lady Pirates out of the intermission. The spurt cut Hannibal's 15-point halftime deficit to just 31-23 with 6 minutes, 5 seconds left in the third quarter.
Keri Bareis added a 3-pointer during the run.
“We really had some good energy going there, but then we ran out,” Hannibal coach Ben Jamerson said.
Mexico, the No. 3 seed, soon put an end to the sixth-seeded Lady Pirates' momentum, scoring nine of the last 14 points of the third quarter before outscoring Hannibal 19-5 in the final period to win 59-33.
Adria Costley led Mexico with 16 points as the Lady Bulldogs defeated Hannibal for the second time this season. The first outcome was 65-30 on Dec. 15.
Hannibal trailed 18-7 through the first quarter Monday and entered halftime down 31-16.
Seven Lady Pirates scored, though none scored more than Bareis and Autumn Bigsby's seven points a piece.
“We executed our game plan for the most part,” Jamerson said. “Unfortunately, the turnover bug continues to be an achilles heel for us, and again, we just didn't shoot the ball very well. The hole we dug in the first half had to do with those two things, in particular.”
Hannibal (4-8) faces No. 7 seed Duchesne in a consolation game at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
