The Hannibal 7th grade Pirates basketball team clawed back from behind and beat Quincy 36-29 on Tuesday to complete an undefeated season.

Unfazed by any pressure, Hannibal (14-0) capped a special season in a fitting way.

“(We) refused to quit, overcame an injury to our best defender and executed well down the stretch,” coach Brett Niemann said. “This team has been great — hardworking and fighters. They cared more about the team than themselves.”

The Pirates jumped on the Blue Devils early thanks to great team effort on defense and a hot start by Aaris Stolte, who netted eight quick points in the first quarter and finished with a team-leading 21.

“(Stolte) told me numerous times today he was going to come out on fire, and he backed it up,” Niemann said.

Court Watson stepped up big, leading a comeback victory in the fourth quarter. He finished with double digit points.

While the Pirates started the same five players they had all season, Niemann said he was proud of how the whole squad rallied together.

“I really appreciated Zach Friedersdorf provided great leadership on the bench while willingly putting the team first,” he said.

The Hannibal A and B teams combined to go 22-0 this season.

“This is a special team that cared for each other, worked hard and overcame any adversity that we faced,” Niemann said. “We approached the game the way it should be played.”
