Students at Eugene Field Elementary School have made friends out of the Hannibal-LeGrange softball team during the past year.
A pen pal program, which the team has been doing for three years, allows the student to pair up with an individual player on the team and exchange letters every several weeks. The players and first graders share photos of themselves and pictures that they have drawn.
The purpose of the program is to get the softball team active in the community while sharpening the first graders’ writing skills.
Earlier this month, the team participated in a cookie party with the class at the school that concluded the annual program. The students got to meet their pen pal in real life, putting faces to the names they’ve been writing to and befriending throughout the school year.
