Hannibal Arts Council staff members are seeking volunteers for the Folklife Festival on Saturday, Oct. 19 and Sunday, Oct. 20

HANNIBAL — Hannibal Arts Council staff members are seeking volunteers for the Folklife Festival on Saturday, Oct. 19 and Sunday, Oct. 20.

Volunteers may sign up for more than one shift or multiple booths. You could even recruit friends and family to help and fill an entire time slot. Here's how to help:

Festival preparation

Setup begins at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at the Bird and Main St. intersection: Friday night set-up is always a time when HAC volunteers need some strong arms and backs to help assemble the Root Beer Booth and signs and distribute. If you work until 5 p.m., just come down when you are able.

Saturday early morning setup of the Root Beer Booth at Bird and Main Streets: Two people are needed to help set up and stock the booth with ice and root beer so the booth is ready for volunteers at 9 a.m.

Saturday early morning setup of the Coffee Booth at Broadway and Main Streets: A setup crew of about four people is needed to help assemble the booth and get it set up fairly early so everyone is ready for serving coffee to vendors in the festival. This would be great for those early risers who would like to volunteer but have other commitments throughout the day.

Coffee booth

If you like the smell of coffee (or are addicted to caffeine) this is the place to be. HAC will also be serving hot chocolate, lemonade and bottled water. They are looking for three people to serve in the booth and 1 person to be a runner to get the coffee from HAC to the coffee booth, and retrieve water bottles/ice from the HAC supply trailers at Bird and Main behind the Root Beer booth (a runner should be someone who is a fairly strong and can both move quickly and stand still and wait).

Saturday time slots are available from 9-11:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., 1:30-3:30 p.m. and 3:30-5 p.m.

Sunday time slots are available from 9-11:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 1:30-4 p.m.

Root beer booth

If you like the fast pace of selling bottled root beer, cream soda and water, this is the place you want to be. HAC volunteers have found two teams of two people serving the bottles, one stocker keeping the bottles stocked in the ice and one runner to get the root beer, ice and water out of the wagon seem to work best (the runner should be someone who is fairly strong and can move quickly and stand still and wait and handle a dolly or cart).

Saturday time slots are available from 9-11:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., 1:30-3:30 p.m. and 3:30-5 p.m.

Sunday time slots are available from 9-11:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 1:30-4 p.m.

Cider booth and beer sales

HAC also has cider and beer sales at the Folklife Festival. Booth chairmen largely take care of finding their volunteers. However, if one of these drink sales booths interests you, just let HAC know and staff members will try to schedule you there in coordination with the committee chairs.

Apples, apples, apples, we need apples!

For demonstration purposes, the Hannibal Arts Council cider crew need apples to use in the cider press. They don’t have to be pretty, because we are going to press them. We can pick them or feel free to deliver them. If you have a lead on the availability of apples, please contact HAC at 573-221-6545 or Laura Judlowe at 660-473-9055

Festival aftermath

After the festival ends, there are many things that need to be coordinated, including the return of festival supplies/equipment to the Hannibal Arts Council building/storage unit, making sure all the booths are taken down and making sure Downtown Hannibal look as good as we found it.

HAC appreciates all the volunteers during the festival, but the setup and takedown volunteer crews are also very important. A few willing bodies and fresh "crew" at the end of the festival is greatly appreciated.

Take-down and clean up starts at:

4 p.m. Sunday at the Root Beer Booth at Bird and Main Streets

4 p.m. Sunday at the Coffee Booth at Broadway and Main Streets

More information is available by contacting the HAC office at 573-221-6545 with volunteer preferences.
