Hannibal native Quinn Thomas carded a 5-over par 77 in the opening round of the U.S. Kids World Teen Championships, but is just six shots from outside the top 10.

PINEHURST, N.C. – Quinn Thomas is sitting in a solid spot after the first round.

A stronger finish in round two could see his name vault up the leaderboard on Friday.

Thomas, a Hannibal native, carded a 5-over par 77 in the opening day of the U.S. Kids World Teen Championships Thursday at Pinehurst No. 5. Thomas sits tied for 46th and is 12 shots behind leader Sihan Sandhu. However, he’s only six shots from putting himself in the top 10.

Had Thomas avoided a couple bogeys to close the round, he’d be up there higher. That means there’s things to build from.

Thomas was 2-over for the day when he birdied the par-4 No. 7, but followed with a bogey on No. 8. He followed a bogey on the par-4 No. 10 with a birdie on No. 11 and recorded pars on the next four holes.

However, he went 2-over across his last three holes.

A 75 would have put Thomas in a tie for 26th.

Thomas will tee off at 10:06 a.m. Friday for the second round and is looking to be one of the top U.S. finishers. The top 6 after the first two rounds are chosen for the Van Horn Cup.
