A Venus, Texas, man reported missing since April was eaten by his own dogs on his property, a Johnson County deputy said Wednesday.

Venus is about 30 miles southeast of Fort Worth.

Freddie Mack, 57, was last seen on April 9, according to a missing persons report obtained by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Deputies were dispatched to the property on a welfare check on May 6, but had difficulty searching the area due to the presence of numerous aggressive dogs.

Deputies returned to the property several times later in May and found multiple bone fragments and small pieces of bone that were analyzed and found to belong to Mack.

“During the course of our investigation it was found that Freddie suffered from serious medical conditions, so we will never know if the dogs killed Mr. Mack or consumed him after he died from a medical condition,” Johnson County Sheriff Adam King said in a news release.

Deputies seized 16 dogs from the property and authorities will euthanize 13 of them, according to the Star-Telegram. There were originally 18 dogs, but two were killed by other dogs.
