Medical professionals are baffled after a Texas couple died from a mystery illness during a trip to Fiji.
David and Michelle Paul, residents of Fort Worth, arrived on the island May 22 and fell ill days later, winding up in the hospital, according to NBC's "Today." Symptoms reportedly included vomiting, diarrhea and numbness in their hands.
They leave behind a 2-year-old son. David Paul also has a daughter from a previous relationship.
The U.S. State Department says it is following the case and prepared to act if needed.
"We are closely monitoring local authorities' investigation into the cause of death,'' the agency said in a statement obtained by "Today." "We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance."
Family members say they've been given few answers thus far.
"Nobody's telling me what was the cause of the death," Michelle Paul's father, Marc Calanog, told "Today." "And that's very hard for me."
