Letter to the Editor:
National Vietnam War Veterans Day is a U.S.A. holiday observed annually on March 29. It recognizes veterans who served in the U.S. military during the Vietnam War. March 29 was chosen to be celebrated in perpetuity as March 29, 1973 was the day Military Assistance Command Vietnam was deactivated. This national commemoration was authorized by Congress, established under the Secretary of Defense and launched by the President to thank and honor our nation's Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice.
By the way, the Hannibal community is building a Veterans Memorial at the Cardiff Hill Overlook (top of former bridge approach). Donors can participate to help build the monument to honor all veterans from Hannibal and beyond. The veteran does not have to be a Hannibal resident.
Information about the Veterans Memorial is available on the Hannibal Parks and Recreation website, www.hannibalparks.com, at the Hannibal Parks and Recreation office at City Hall, 320 Broadway or call 573-221-0154.
