Flying is a family affair for Wendy Rexon and her daughter, Kelly Rexon.

The duo recently piloted a Delta flight from Los Angeles to Atlanta, with Wendy Rexon serving as captain and Kelly Rexon serving as first officer. Within minutes of landing, their faces were plastered all over social media, thanks to a tweet from Dr. John Watret, chancellor of the Embry-Riddle Worldwide Campus.

That tweet — "Just flew from LAX to ATL on Delta piloted by this mother daughter flight crew. Great Flight. Inspiring for young women" — was retweeted and liked thousands of times. It also spawned a number of news stories. (Including this one.)

“The first officer had a great role model for becoming a pilot – her mother,” Watret said in a written statement. “It’s good for aviation and inspiring for all of us.”

Female pilots are a rarity in commercial aviation, according to Embry-Riddle, accounting for just 7 percent of the workforce. Watret is hoping to change that.

“There has to be more diversification in the industry,” Watret said. “It’s crucial and one of the key factors we focus on. When there are more opportunities, everyone wins.
