Members of the Palmyra High School Quiz Bowl team advanced to the championship of the WGEM Academic Challenge Quiz Bowl Tournament with a 205 to 135 win over Illini West High School on Saturday, March 2. This match was fifth in a seven-part television series airing weekly on WGEM NBC, WGEM FOX and WGEM News Talk FM 105.1.

Palmyra High School team members include: Mason Mitchell, Evan Nierman, Trevor Stratton, Chase Goldinger and Tim Wellman. Palmyra's team is coached by Gretta Stark.

Illini West High School team members include: Hunter Boston, Mason Burling, Laura Carpenter, Abby Johnson, Logan Little, Donovan Squier, Tanner Miller and Bryce Payne. The Illini West team is coached by Kim Johnson and Connie Flesner.

The next Academic Challenge broadcast will feature a semifinal match between Clopton and Bushnell-Prairie on at 6:30 p.m. Saturday March 9, on WGEM NBC and again at 9 p.m. Sunday, March 10 on WGEM FOX TV and at 10:30 p.m. on WGEM NBC. In addition, the match will air on WGEM News Talk FM 105.1 at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9 and at 7 a.m. Sunday, March 10.

The WGEM Academic Challenge features 16 schools from the tri-state region competing in 15 matches. The host of this year’s tournament is WGEM Sports Director Tony Cornish Jr. The series is co-sponsored by John Wood Community College and WGEM.

Judges for the 2019 Academic Challenge are JWCC faculty members Melissa Knapp, assistant professor of mathematics; Mike Terry, interim dean of arts and sciences; and Dr. Randy Wolfmeyer, assistant professor of engineering. The series is under the direction of Shawn Dickerman, marketing director at WGEM.
