Seven members of the Hannibal High School wrestling team will represent HHS at next weekend's state finals in Columbia. They earned the right to advance by placing in the top four in the Class 3, District 2 tournament last weekend in St. Charles.. "We would like to congratulate all of the state qualifiers this year," said Hannibal Coach Derek Greening, whose team finished second in the district tournament. Three Pirates were champions in their respective weight classes - Tyler Leonard (132 pounds), 4-0; Garrett Ruby (152 pounds), 4-0; and Vernell Hawkins (170 pounds), 3-0. Placing second for Hannibal in the district were: Tanner Leonard (145 pounds), 3-1; Trevor Wilson (160 pounds), 2-1; and Chase Kirby (220 pounds), 2-1. Hannibal's other state qualifier was Gavin Morawitz (138 pounds), who finished fourth with a 2-2 record. Hannibal's other competitors in the district tournament were: Darrell Taylor (126 pounds), 0-2; Brady Zimmerman (182 pounds), 1-2; and Jameson White (195 pounds), 2-2.
Saturday was a special day for dozens of professional wrestlers and scores of fans at the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center, as the American Championship Wrestling event ushered in the hometown debut for Roy Lewis (Aaron Roy), and appearances by World Wrestling Entertainment Superstar Kane (Glenn Jacobs) and WWE Superstar and trainer Dr. Tom Prichard
