The not-for-profit North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC) is expanding the Self-Help Housing Program to seek applicants in Monroe County.

NECAC is a 12-county area not-for-profit social service, community health and public housing Community Action Agency that serves the low-income, elderly, youth, disabled and disadvantaged. The agency’s Central Administration Offices are located in Bowling Green, with NECAC Service Centers operated in each county.

NECAC initially was awarded a $159,000 USDA Rural Development grant to finance renovation work at 26 owner-occupied homes in Marion, Pike and Ralls counties. So far, work has been completed at six homes. The agency is now accepting applications in Monroe County.

"We welcome this opportunity to expand the Self-Help Housing Program into Monroe County," said NECAC Deputy Director for Housing Development Programs Carla Potts. "The great thing about this program is that it takes care of the immediate renovation needs, but it also teaches people how they can fix things in the future."

Under the direction of NECAC Self-Help Housing Supervisor Brian Reed, income-qualifying families and individuals work do the renovation work. Supplies are purchased through the program.
