Supportive messages are pouring in on social media in remembrance of a Hannibal woman after she died in a Wednesday fire at Country Hearth Inn.
Sharon Hale's family needs a helping hand from community members to help cover funeral expenses. As of Thursday afternoon, almost 70 community residents expressed their condolences and prayers through Facebook.
“Prayers for the McCloud family.... anyone else besides me who wants to donate can call 573-795-3334 for her funeral,” Debbie Golian posted. “God bless this family, this is so sad.”
“I'm so sorry! My heart breaks for you and your family!” Sheila Allison posted. “Prayers for you all!” Faith Curry offered her prayers, too.
“If anyone needs anything, please PM me,” she posted. “So, so sorry for the loss.”
Hannibal firefighters responded from all three stations at 12:43 p.m. to the hotel, finding heavy smoke and fire coming from an occupied room near the rear of the building. Personnel had the fire under control within 10 minutes — quickly extinguishing the fire during a search of the room. Hale was transferred to Hannibal Regional by Marion County Ambulance District EMTs, but she died as a result of smoke inhalation, Marion County Coroner Rick Jones said.
Hannibal firefighters called in four additional firefighters, and they remained on the scene for about four hours to investigate and perform overhaul operations. The blaze was ruled accidental, and the suspected cause of the fire was improper use of smoking materials while using oxygen, said Mike O'Connell, Communications Director with the Missouri Department of Public Safety.
The extent of the damage was not yet clear on Thursday, hotel owner Victor Patel said. It was not apparent if adjacent rooms were damaged, and he plans to reach out to contractors to survey the area before moving forward with repairs.
