A Hannibal native is marking his retirement from the U.S. Army after a long career.

Command Sergeant Major Jody King graduated from Hannibal High School in 1989. He enlisted in the Army in October 1993, attended Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort McClellan, Ala., where he was awarded the MOS 74D, Chemical Operation Specialist.

King retired on Nov. 1, 2017. His last assignment was the Command Sergeant Major of the Columbia Recruiting Battalion in Fort Jackson, S.C., where the Battalion was responsible to recruit about 1,900  new soldiers each year for the Army and Army Reserve.  

King’s military and civilian education includes Warrior Leaders Course, Advanced Leaders Course (Honor Graduate), Senior Leaders Course, Department of Army and USAREC First Sergeant Course, and the United States Army Sergeant Majors Academy (Class 63). He is a graduate of the following military courses: U.S. Army Airborne School, Air Assault School, NBC NCO Course, Army Recruiter Course(Distinguished Honor Graduate), Station Commander Course, Guidance Counselor and Operations Course. CSM King graduated Magna Cum Laude from Grantham University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administrative on June 2009.

King’s earlier assignments include: Chemical Operation Specialist, 59th Chemical Company, Fort Drum, New York; Nuclear Biological Chemical NCO, Bravo Company 41st Engineer, Fort Drum, New York; Squad Leader & Platoon Sergeant, 87th Chemical Company, Fort Polk, Louisiana.

King joined the Recruiting Command in February 2000 as a Recruiter in Hannibal. He has served in several positions: On-Production Station Commander in Hannibal; Limited Production Station Commander - Cape Girardeau, Mo.; Company Operation Trainer - Cape Girardeau Recruiting Company; First Sergeant - Central Illinois Recruiting Company, Peoria, Ill.; First Sergeant - Liberty Recruiting Company, Liberty, Mo.; First Sergeant - Athens Recruiting Company, Athens, Ga., and Operations Sergeant Major – Fresno Recruiting Battalion, Fresno, Calif.

His awards and decorations include: The Meritorious Service Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Army Achievement Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters. He has earned the Airborne Badge, Air Assault Badge, Glen E. Morrell Award for Recruiting Excellence, the Recruiter Ring and the Gold Recruiter Badge.

King is married to the former Dionna Webb. They have three children. King resides with his wife in Suwanee, Ga.
