While sickness has cut into the pool of crossing guards available at Eugene Field Elementary School, the Market and Houston streets were manned Thursday.

Despite the fact a steady mist was falling Thursday morning in Hannibal, crossing guards armed with large umbrellas were on duty at Eugene Field Elementary School.

According to Principal Marty Hull Pirate and multi-colored umbrellas are provided for crossing guards by the school.

The two crossing guards on duty Thursday had their pick of the approximately 10 umbrellas available because sickness has cut into the number of crossing guards that are available.

Hull reports that typically two students man the crossing points at Market and Houston streets, but due to illness one crossing guard was available Thursday at each of the two streets.
