Both drivers injured in U.S. 61 collision

Dennis R. Powell, 25, of Hannibal, Mo., and Carol A. Race, 71, of Kirksville, Mo. were injured in a collision at 7:42 a.m. Sunday, May 29, on U.S. 61 two miles north of Frankford, Mo.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported Powell was driving a southbound 1998 Chevrolet S10, which struck the side of a bridge and went off the left side of the road.

The truck then crossed the median, hit a guard rail and collided head on with a northbound 2009 Mazda 5 driven by Race.

Officers said Powell, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered serious injuries. He was flown to the University Hospital in Columbia, Mo

Race was wearing a seat belt and suffered moderate injuries. She was flown to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

The State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Ralls and Pike Counties Sheriff's Departments, New London and Hannibal Fire Departments, and ambulance personnel from Ralls County, Pike County and Marion County.
