The Northeast Missouri Humane Society announced it received a $10,000 grant from the Petco Foundation, boosting comfort and daily operations for staff members and animals alike.

The grant, which was announced on Monday, May 16, will provide permanent dog beds and industrial washer and dryer units for the shelter, replacing thick rubber mats for the dogs. Shelter Administrator Kurt Groenda said the new beds would provide a more comfortable sleeping spot for canines, elevate them about five inches off the ground and ease cleaning work for staff. The shelter will benefit from an industrial washer and dryer, due to the numerous loads of blankets, towels and other laundry that need to be washed every day.

Groenda said that some residential top-loader machines only last six to eight months. But heavy-duty versions have removable filters that allow staff to remove material like hair and cat litter.

The Northeast Humane Society had similar dog beds in the past, but they gradually broke down and the ends were chewed up. Groenda expects excellent durability from the new beds.

"As any pet love will tell you, providing care for an animal is a labor of love. At the Northeast Missouri Humane Society our staff provides that care to dozens of cats and dogs on a daily basis. The assistance from the Petco Foundation will help make those efforts easier," Perkins said.

With summer just ahead, Groenda said the shelter always needs donations such as bleach, paper towels, dry cat food and dry dog food. He agreed that the grant and new equipment would offer a big boost at the shelter.

"It's just really going to benefit the animals quite a bit, and we're really excited about that."

The Northeast Missouri Humane Society is a nonprofit organization assisting municipalities and the general public with domesticated animal issues, serving Marion and Ralls counties. Since 1966, the Northeast Missouri Humane Society has cared for thousands of domesticated animals.

The Petco Foundation awards grants to support its efforts to save lives, provide a network service for lost or homeless domestic animals and to educate the public.
