COLUMBIA, Mo. | The Hannibal varsity volleyball team fell to Hickman in Columbia in its season opener on Tuesday.

The Pirates lost in three straight sets to the Kewpies, 25-18, 25-16 and 25-12.

“Tough serving and hitting from Hickman was a problem for us tonight,” said Hannibal head coach Megan Phillips.

Hannibal's Bella Falconer had one ace, three kills and 10 digs. Allie Hull also had 10 digs, while Kendel Locke had six kills.

The Hannibal junior varsity squad also lost to Hickman in three straight sets, 25-11, 25-16 and 25-21.

Hannibal has started the regular season later than in prior seasons and will not host its home opener until Monday, Sept. 21.

“They are definitely ready to see live action besides our JV squad,” Phillips said. “They are very antsy to play. I think the extra practices have been really good for us though, with how young we are this season.”

Hannibal opens up the season with an 0-1 record and will travel to Mexico on Thursday for a 6 p.m. game.
