HANNIBAL | The Hannibal boys varsity soccer team lost its first match of the year on Friday to Southern Boone 2-0 at home.
“I'm very proud of our effort tonight,” said Hannibal head coach Eric Hill. “Even with the loss, I believe we are headed in the right direction.”
The game was scoreless entering halftime and Hannibal came close to taking the lead in the second half when Trevauhn Jenkins shot hit off the inside post and DaeShon Glasgow's follow up shot went just wide of the goal.
A couple minutes later, Hannibal had another scoring attempt that was blocked by the Southern Boone goalkeeper. Soon after, Southern Boone went on the offense and scored a goal to take a 1-0 lead.
Southern Boone scored its second goal late in the game to secure a 2-0 victory.
“Southern Boone's second goal came with five minutes remaining when (goalkeeper) Parker Terrill made the initial save on a full extension, bu the ball was jarred loose as he hit the ground,” Hill said. “The Eagles pounced on the loose and buried it in the back of the net.”
Hannibal moves to a 2-1 record for the season and played at Moberly on Tuesday.
The Hannibal junior varsity team lost 1-0 to Southern Boone on Friday as well, with its record moving to 0-1-1.
