Great Girlfriend Getaway offers music, new skills

HANNIBAL | Music performed outdoors at numerous locations to avoid crowding will be among the attractions at the Aug. 7, 8 and 9 Great Girlfriend Getaway in downtown Hannibal.

Among other details announced by the sponsoring Historic Hannibal Marketing Council, this year instead of a registration location to obtain coupon books, no central locations is planned, with coupons for the various merchants' specials available online on

The event was originally scheduled in April but delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Linda Studer, owner of Mississippi Marketplace, said.

“We are super excited to have all the ladies and girls come out next weekend, and we are going to do special sales and demonstrations such as the e-cloth, a product for sanitizing,” Studer said, along with cleaning demonstrations on Friday, showing how to disinfect without using harsh chemicals.

Also at Mississippi Marketplace, “We will have people handing out samples and will demonstrate a bunch of our kitchen gadgets” at noon and 3 p.m. Saturday, Studer said, and she will offer food samples all three days.

Another free opportunity to learn will be offered by Master Historic Preservationist Bob Yapp, who will teach home maintenance skills needed for old houses at his Belvedere Inn.

From 2 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Yapp will do a brief version of what he teaches regular classes in two days. “I will walk them through a whole cadre of different things people should know about how to take care of their old houses,” he said. Advance registration is required but it may be done on Friday.

Also on Saturday, a special event is planned from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Native American Trading Co. Owner Mike Ocheltree explained Rod Jackson, owner of Nuwati Herbals in St. Louis will do a demonstration of his Cherokee herbal remedies. “He has been in business since 2003, and I was his first customer,” Ocheltree said.

Danni Nicole's shop is ready for the weekend with 500 colorful masks for sale along with special sales with coupons on the weekend event's website.

The Powder Room is offering a special price for a manicure-pedicure all day Friday and Saturday. Call 573-221-0700 for an appointment.

The weekly farmer's market on Saturday morning in Central Park will have an added attraction, when Emily Trevathan of Twisted Juniper Yoga Studio offers a beginner to expert yoga class for $5.
