HANNIBAL | The 2020 Hannibal Cannibal 5/10/15K run and 5-K walk attracted more than 1,600 participants on the Fourth of July, despite changes to comply with COVID-19 social distancing rules.

One change was that runners could begin any time between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., rather than together.

The route remained the same, with bottled water provided this year.

Another change was not scheduling the fun run, because of social distancing, according to Race Director Angie Wilcoxson.

Reporting more than 1,600 runners or walkers participated, Wilcoxson explained, “We usually have about 1,700 to 1,900. We had a good turnout and good showing.”

This year with no awards ceremony, the trophies and medals will be mailed to the top three male and female finishers in each distance.

All proceeds from the Hannibal Cannibal will go into the Hannibal Regional Foundation Heroes Fund, which will offer assistance to Hannibal Regional Healthcare System team members who have met personal or financial challenges due to the pandemic.

“I appreciate all the volunteers and sponsors,” Wilcoxson said, “also the police and sheriff's departments, highway patrol, EMTs, City of Hannibal and MoDOT.

“We are looking forward to next year being able to get back to normal.”
