MONROE CITY, Mo. – Madelyn Meyer's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a tie game and lifted the Monroe City softball team to a 5-3 Clarence Cannon Conference victory over Highland Monday night.

Monroe City entered the frame trailing 3-2. Bailee Hays led off with a walk and moved to second on Riley Quinn's ground out. That set up Emma Freidank's RBI triple that tied the game at 3-3. After a strikeout, Meyer smacked the home run to center field for a 5-3 advantage.

Quinn worked a perfect seventh inning to seal the game.

Monroe City led 2-0 after two innings when Hays had an RBI grounder in the first to score Lauren Youngblood in the opening frame, and Youngblood drew a bases-loaded walk in the second.

Highland, however, tied the game in the top of the third with Gabby Brown's RBI single and when Addy Johnson scored on a passed ball. The Cougars took the lead in the fifth on Johnson's sacrifice fly to score Lauren Merrell.

Youngblood and Freidank each had two hits for Monroe City. Merrell had two hits for Highland.

Merrell threw six innings, allowing five runs on five hits while striking out 11 and walking two. Quinn allowed four hits, striking out eight and walking four.
