The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is starting to see a spike in phone scams.

Officials have reached out to the media in reference to these scams, however members of the Marion County Sheriff's Office want to remind citizens these scams are still going on.

The most recent scam occurred when a male impersonating a Sheriff’s Office employee called a victim and threatened to arrest her if she didn’t pay a debt balance. The scammer was able to trick her into giving her credit/debit card information using scare tactics. Fortunately, the victim was able to contact her credit card service and have it blocked before any funds were withdrawn. The scammers use computer software to “spoof” phone numbers — making them look like the Sheriff’s office phone number.

It is also the time of year where stealing and burglaries take place. Please be sure to lock all your valuables up and keep your Christmas tree and presents out of site when you are not home. Security lights/cameras are also a great investment for your home.
