Hannibal High School will soon be instituting a new way to get information to the public. A new message board was installed earlier this week on the high school’s front lawn by Park Place Sign Systems.
According to Rich Stilley, business manager for the school district, the Hannibal business “has done a great job of developing and producing the sign. We are so excited to have this coming to fruition after all of these years of hard work and planning.”
The new message board has been a point of discussion for some time.
“The original process began five or six years ago, spawned from a discussion with Ryan Sharkey and Ted Sampson,” said Stilley.
The new message board will be hard to miss for those passing north or south on McMaster’s Avenue. The sign’s cabinet is 13 feet tall, 5 feet deep and 12 feet wide. The double-sided, color message board is 3 feet by 9 feet.
According to Stilley, the new message board can be formatted to show text, video and pictures.
“It will be used to highlight information on events, student success, achievements and positive happenings at HHS,” he said, adding that members of the administration and office personnel will be responsible for the sign’s content.
The new message board cost $30,676.
“The majority of the funds have been raised over a period of nearly five to six years of fundraising and private donations,” said Stilley.
The existing message board will not be retired.
“It will be converted to a ‘Welcome to Hannibal High School’ sign with a donated replacement sign,” said Stilley.
The current message board has been in place for over three decades.
“It was donated in by the class of 1981-82 in memory of former teacher G.G. Gibbons,” said Stilley. “The marquee was later refurbished in 1997 by the Key Club and Student Council.”
