Halloween is right around the corner and many of us have yet to decide on a satisfactory costume. Whether you’re a kid or an adult, donning an alter ego for one night can be a bit of fun. But it can also be a way to celebrate Hannibal. Here are five Halloween costumes perfect for the young Hannibalian in your family:
This one seems a bit obvious. The pirate is the mascot of Hannibal’s lone public high school. It’s easy to get into a pirate costume with a tatted white shirt, cut off pants, a hook, an eye patch and maybe a bandanna. This costume choice is also timely, as a remake of the children’s classic, Peter Pan, recently hit the silver screen.
2. Mark Twain and characters
Also an obvious choice, there are plenty of choices to go along with Hannibal’s most famous son. From Twain himself (must find an appropriately wacky wig) to Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher, there are plenty of characters to choose from in this genre as well. No need to go all out, a simple solid-colored shirt and cut off jeans would do just fine for most boys.
The first of several not-so-obvious nods to Hannibal, a pilot costume pays homage to William Lear, a NEMO native and inventor of the Lear jet. Again (and we’re starting to see a theme here), there’s no need to go all out on this costume, but a old-style pilot hat would make a retro pilot costume stand out — especially if it had the goggles to go with it.
For a high education approach, try donning a helmet and armor as a Trojans. As the only higher education option in town with a mascot, the Hannibal-LaGrange University Trojans played in the NAIA. Who wouldn’t want to see the cute juxtaposition of a toddler dressed as a warrior.
5. Riverboat captain
We all know life in Hannibal once revolved around the river. That’s not as much the case presently, but the idea of a riverboat captain could be perfect as a Halloween idea.
