Ben M. Broughton, 92, of Hannibal, Mo., passed away at 7:49 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015, at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Hannibal. Father Mike Quinn and Father Pat Pierceall will officiate.

Graveside services and burial, with full military rites by American Legion Post #376, will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, at St. Mary's Cemetery in Shelbina, Mo.

Friends and family are invited to Ben's life celebration at a visitation from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with Rosary at 4:30 PM, Friday, Oct. 16, 2015, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal.

Ben was born July 4, 1923, in Shelbina, Mo., to Earl and Priscilla “Lilly” Buckman Broughton.

He was first married to LaVerne Marie Magruder on April 7, 1947, in Shelbina, Mo. She preceded him in death on Dec. 4, 1991.

He later married Josephine “Jo” Worth on May 3, 1997, in Hannibal, Mo. She survives.

Survivors include two sons, Gary Broughton (Barbara) of Hannibal, Mo., and Donald Broughton (Kenna Rae) of Shelbina, Mo.; two stepchildren, Jeff Worth (Jean) of Chaska, Minn. and Jeri Lynn Crist (Duval) of Germantown, Md.; six grandchildren, Angela Peters (Kevin), Brad Broughton, Chris Broughton (Heidi), Brooke Broughton, Nick Broughton (Erin) and Erica Crist; six great-grandchildren, Aaron Peters, Lauren Peters, Molly Broughton, Colton Broughton, Eboni Mayfield and Paisley Broughton. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Broughton is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Melvin Broughton and Julius Broughton.

Mr. Broughton was a United States Army Veteran. He served his country during World War II. He was a lifelong farmer and the fifth generation of his family to live and work on the family farm. He was also a seed salesman with Super Crost. During his retirement, he worked at Hannibal Regional Hospital. Ben was an active volunteer with the Hannibal Regional Hospital Auxiliary; he drove the shuttle and worked in the one-day care waiting room and as a greeter.

Ben was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post #376 in Shelbina, Mo. He never knew a stranger and made friends with everyone, wherever he went. Ben enjoyed vacations at the Lake of the Ozarks, bird watching and feeding the squirrels. Ben was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #907 and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. At Holy Family, Ben was a greeter and a communion minister for the hospital. Ben was also a member of the YMCA and AARP.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Good Neighbor Project or Hannibal Regional Hospital Auxiliary, in care of the James O'Donnell Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Brad Broughton, Chris Broughton, Nick Broughton, Kevin Peters, Aaron Peters, Jeff Worth, Duval Crist and Brooke Broughton.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ben's CRHP Team, Richie Fogle, Joe Niemeyer, Dick Rupp, Kevin Murphy, Richard Hayes, Mark Quinn, Jim Mudd, Mike Wickens, David Smoot, Ken Zielinski and the late Kenny Buckman.
