According to witnesses on Cardiff Hill, tall, shooting flames were visible before emergency responders arrived on the scene. The flames were considerably diminished within about ten minutes, according to the witnesses.

Emergency personnel applied a specific treatment that rapidly turned the smoke from black to white, according to Courier-Post Managing Editor Eric Dundon, who was on the scene.

MoDOT issued a notice that all traffic was being diverted at U.S. 61 and U.S. 36 in Hannibal.
