The question

A reader recently contacted the Courier-Post regarding the city’s enforcement of its ordinances regarding the placement of trash dumpsters on Hannibal streets.

The reader cited instances where dumpsters either had no permits, or expired permits. The individual also noted some dumpsters presented a safety hazard.

The answer

Permits for a dumpster cost $20 for a 30-day permit. Permits may be secured at City Hall or the Street Department.

All dumpsters placed on streets must have a safety cone beside it, or with “suitable reflectors.”

The Department of Public Works looks into public complaints regarding dumpsters. While an assortment of complaints are received regarding them, the biggest is that they are not picked up once they are full.

What this means to you

Enforcement of the city’s trash dumpster ordinances is especially important because of safety considerations. Dumpters can present a hazard for motorists if they are not equipped with reflectors, or are placed too far from the curb.
