Heading into the state meet, Hannibal junior Lliot Gieseke had decent seed times in his two individual events, the 50 free and the 100 free. Gieseke used those seed times to secure a spot in the championship finals of both events.
After finishing eighth in the prelims with a time of :21.97, the Pirate junior had an even better swim in the finals. Gieseke swam a :21.70 to finish fourth in the state. Additionally, not only was Gieseke’s time a new personal best for the 50 free, but it also broke the Hannibal school record which was set by George Walley back in 1998.
In the 100 free, the same event Gieseke swam to a 10th place finish a year ago, the Hannibal junior had another record setting performance.
One day earlier, Gieseke set the school record for the fastest 100 free time with a time of :47.34. He improved upon that time in the finals, finishing the event in :46.99 to re-break his own school record while placing fifth overall in the state. Gieseke actually broke the record multiple times this year on his way to the state meet.
While the relay teams did not advance past the preliminary heats, the Hannibal 400 freestyle relay set a new school record. Shay Wade, Jamey Lemon, Tyler Bush, and Gieseke finished the relay in 3:27.38, breaking the record set by last year’s team.
