Some of the women meandering through the downtown Hannibal shops and other businesses Saturday, April 26, had arrived in town without knowing a special Just Girls weekend was in progress.

One group of six was from Warrenton, Mo., and three of them were spending their annual “girls weekend” together. They soon learned about the special sales, menus and services offered on Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27.

Once a year Pam Schwamle, Anne Coleman and Angie Newenhaus, spend a weekend together while their husbands have a fishing camp.

“We’re here to have a good time,” said Newenhaus. “This is our 10th annual ‘girls’ weekend.’ … We didn’t know (about Just Girls weekend).”

They had taken the last available room at their hotel.

Coleman had enjoyed lunch at Kerleys, reporting “they had good food. … We will do a little shopping and go to the Mark Twain Museum.”

One of the busiest stores on North Main Saturday was the Mississippi Marketplace, with its specialty foods, dips, and many types of spices and flavorings.

Barb Troeger of Springfield, Ill., had loaded her basket with yogurt-covered pretzels, a variety of chips, strawberry dip and dill dip.

Troeger visits Hannibal often, because her son, Jordan Troeger, is attending Hannibal-LaGrange University.

Some of the ladies were mother-daughter teams. Hanna Clark of New London and her mom, Karla Clark, had lunch at the Mark Twain Dinette, where Hanna especially enjoyed her chicken strips.

Kayla Northcutt of Hannibal paused while trying on rings at Cougar Country Outpost to report she especially liked the margaritas at Danni Nicole's.

Another local woman was Josie Morris, who was looking at dresses in the shops and trying the special foods.

Morris had come from working at the Holiday Inn Express, where, she said, “because of Just Girls weekend, we were pretty busy.” She added that some women arrived Friday and were leaving Saturday after attending Just Girls weekend.

Saturday’s sunny weather was much more inviting than Sunday’s, when intermittent rains made street strolling less appealing.
