Pirates baseball drops two
The Hannibal baseball season got under way Friday, and the Pirates were handed a loss. Playing at Boonville, Hannibal lost 10-5. Zach Nichols went 3-for-4 with a run scored in the loss. Jeremy Myers went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. The big hit of the game came from Chris Gregory, who belted a home run.
Monday Hannibal took its second shot at win No. 1 with another road game against Kirksville. The Pirates lost to Kirksville 10-6. Jay Mosley and Charlie Fohey each had two hits and two runs. Fohey added two RBIs to the back of his baseball card. Paul Trenahile picked up the loss for the Pirates on the mound.
The JV team won 8-7 on Monday with Danny Sawyer picking up the win. Zach Voss had a bases-clearing double in the win.

The Mark Twain Tigers are now 3-1 after winning on Monday. On the road against Cairo, Mark Twain won 13-1. Matt Diffenderfer earned the win for the Tigers. Caleb Jameson knocked in two runs with a triple for Mark Twain. David Scott and Trey Elliott each went 2-for-2 with an RBI in the Tigers’ win.
Mark Twain won its second game at the Clarence Cannon Conference Tournament on Saturday. Taking on Monroe City, the Tigers won 13-1.
Monroe City falls to 0-3
The start of the baseball season hasn’t been kind to Monroe City. The Panthers opened the season Saturday at the Clarence Cannon Conference Tournament with an 11-10 loss to Highland. Tyler Gosney and Will Long were each 1-for-4 with three RBIs in the loss. Zach Garner was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
In the second game of the tournament, Monroe City lost to Mark Twain 13-1. Long had the lone RBI for the Panthers.
Things didn’t get much better for the Panthers on Monday. Monroe City faced off with Canton and lost 25-0 in five innings. Long, C.J. Haden and Blake Rodgers were each 1-for-2 in the loss.
Palmyra stays undefeated
With a win Monday, the Palmyra Panthers improved to 4-0. Taking on Liberty, Palmyra won 4-1. Chad Englehardt had the big hit for the Panthers, knocking in two runners in the fourth the help Palmyra get the win. Austin Hinkle went 2-for-3 with the bat with an RBI and a double but was even better from the bump. He pitched a complete game, striking out 10, scattering five hits and allowing no earned runs.
Saturday at the Clarence Cannon Conference Tournament the Panthers picked up two wins. First up was Centralia. Behind two RBIs from Keith Caldwell, who went 2-for-4, and a triple play in the fourth inning, Colten Goode picked up the win.
The second game of the CCC tourney wasn’t nearly as close. Palmyra beat South Shelby 18-1. Hinkle was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Luke Powell had two hits, a double and an RBI. Levi Miles picked up the win.
The Hannibal Lady Pirates soccer team fell to .500 after a loss Monday. On the road for the first time all season, the Lady Pirates lost to Boonville 8-2. Kaitlin King and Kristen Dodd scored for Hannibal. Theressa Sheffer had an assist on Dodd’s goal. Kadie Hays had 13 saves in the game. Hannibal head coach Eric Hill said without Hays, it could’ve been a lot worse. The Hannibal JV tied Boonville 0-0. The JV team is now 0-0-2.
The Hannibal Pirates tennis team handled Quincy on Monday, winning all but one match. No. 1 player Bhavesh Katbamna won his match 6-0, 6-2. No. 3 player Eli Jackson picked up his win 6-1, 6-1. Chris Bueler, the No. 4 player, won 6-4, 6-1. Jacob Grimes picked up a 7-5, 6-1 win in the fifth spot. James Zeiger, the No. 6 singles player, won his match 6-1, 6-1. No. 2 player Daniel Ouellette lost his match 5-7, 2-6.
In doubles action, Katbamna and Bueler won 6-2, 6-3. Jackson and Oullette won 6-2, 6-0. Grimes and Zeiger won 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 10-5.
In JV action, Murray McFarlane won 8-3, 8-1. Matt Flanigan won 8-5, 8-5. Mitchell Crane split his matches 3-8, 8-6. Brett Hinton tied 6-8, 8-4. Jared Held lost 1-8, 5-8. T.C. Pierceall lost 4-8. Steven Smoot lost 4-8. Anthony Haar lost 1-8. Phillip Murphy lost 6-8. Kristopher Willing lost 3-8. Chris Mefford lost 3-8.
North Shelby 17
Putnam Co. 2
North Shelby won Monday 17-2 aginst Putnam County. Nolan Otto, Adam McDowell, Bradley Craigmyle and Josh Mesmer each had two hits in the win.
The Palmyra golf team lost to Centralia on Monday, 171-176. Ryan DeHann finished second in the match, carding a 40. Kyle Browing (41), Taylor Schubert (42) and Roy Smith (53) were the other scorers for the Panthers. Mitchell Sutter’s 61 was dropped.
Mo. Bap has HLG’s number
Missouri Baptist took four games from HLG, with two coming Monday. Saturday HLG lost 11-1 and 1-0 to Mo. Bap. On Monday HLG lost 9-2 and 15-3. Clint Hamilotn had a home run in Monday’s first game and was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the second game.
The Hannibal-LaGrange softball team took on Greenville College on Monday and came away with a win and a loss. In Game 1, HLG lost 1-0. The Lady Trojans rebounded in Game 2, winning 4-3.
