Claude E. “Paddle” Maddox, 85, of Palmyra, died at 7:57 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home.


Claude E. “Paddle” Maddox, 85, of Palmyra, died at 7:57 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home.
Paddle was born Sept. 16, 1924, in Palmyra to Claude A. and Margaret Happel Maddox.
Paddle married Helen Krogman July 4, 1956, in Palmyra.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; daughter, Sandy (Dennis) Vogelpohl of Valparaiso, Ind.; son, Randy Maddox of Palmyra; brothers, Glenn (Shirley) Maddox of Palmyra, and Conrad Maddox of Quincy, Ill.; sisters, Gwen (Gene)  Maddux  of Palmyra, and Janet Sue De Laun of Basile, La.; grandchildren, Kristin Roux of Portage, Mi., Eric Vogelpohl of Valparaiso, Ind., Lacey Maddox of Palmyra, Jason Voglepohl of West Lafayette, Ind., and Melissa Maddox of Palmyra; and great-granddaughter, Madeleine Roux of Portage, Mi.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude A. Maddox and Margaret E. Heinze; sister, Kathleen Archer; and a grandson, Ryan Vogelpohl.   
Paddle was the second lineman, hired by Northeast Power in 1949, and he retired in 1988.
He attended Palmyra High School. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II as a member of the 69th Infantry and was discharged as a corporal. He was a member of Boots-Dickson Post No. 174 of the American Legion and Norfolk-Smith 11041 of the VFW. He loved golfing and was an active member of Jackson Park Golf Club.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28, at the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. The Rev. Marty Smyser will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Palmyra.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, at the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel.
