Seven people will be meeting with the Hannibal City Council on Tuesday, Dec. 29, to make their pitch as to why they should be appointed to fill the Third Ward seat on the council.
By the Dec. 18 deadline the following individuals had submitted letters of interest: Donald Sagar, 807 Bird; Wesley Knapp, 221 N. Hayden; Monica Williams, 2109 Spruce; Louis Barta, 1238 Bird; Roy Que Ferrel, 1308 Grace; Robert Saxbury, 1908 Chestnut; and Jack Moore, 2415 Broadway.
“I’m pleased with the amount of interest,” said Hannibal Mayor Roy Hark. “We have good people running and I’m glad to see that.”
Both Williams and Sagar have previously sought the Third Ward council seat that had been held for 20 years by Kyle Wilson, who died Nov. 21. In 2006, Williams finished third behind Wilson and Cynthia Bynum. Last April, Sagar lost by a 66-41 margin to Wilson.
More people submitted letters of interest from the Third Ward than did from the Fourth Ward in 2008 following the death of Mayor Pro Tem Jim Dexheimer. A total of six people went before the council then.
Hark expects the Tuesday, Dec. 29, special call meeting of the council at city hall will follow a similar pattern as in 2008 when the council met with the pool of candidates during a special meeting but delayed making a decision.
“I’ll leave it up to the council,” said Hark, regarding whether a decision will be made Dec. 29. “There are five others besides me.”
The council’s first scheduled meeting in 2010 is Jan. 5.
Whoever is appointed will have to run in the April 2010 municipal election if they wish to serve during the remainder of the unexpired three-year term.
