Hannibal grapplers bring home four titles

The Hannibal wrestling team had a successful weekend at the Fort Zumwalt South Tournament, finishing runner up in the 12-team tournament. That said, the Pirates also reached some major accomplishments at the tournament. Hannibal crowned four undefeated tournament champions, had one third place finishing individual, tied a school record for the fastest pin and had a grappler record his 100th win.

Wrestling in the 220-weight class, Kyle Muehring tied a school record for the fastest pin. Muehring pinned his opponent from Owensville in just five seconds. Muehring tied the Hannibal record set by teammate Chandler Fohey two years and five days prior.

Muehring also went undefeated in the tournament and claimed the 220-wight class championship. The Hannibal senior improved his season record to 34-2 while also moving his career record to 162-19.

Joining Muehring as a tournament champion was Austin Janes. The senior also picked up his 100th career win during a match in the 132-weight class against Hillsborough. Janes beat his opposition by technical fall for the milestone win. Janes improved his season mark to 27-7 and his career record to 103-28.

Fohey also won an individual championship over the weekend, going 5-0 on the day in the 126-weight class. The two-time defending state champion improved his record to 37-2 for the year and 165-19 during his time at Hannibal.

Austin Hawes was Hannibal’s final champion on the day. A state qualifier last year, Hawes was a perfect 5-0 Saturday while claiming the championship in the 182-weight class. Hawes improved his record to 26-9 this season and 67-54 over his three year wrestling career.

While suffering a pair of losses, Brad Dillman worked his way back through wrestlebacks to finish the tourney in third place. Dillman has already doubled his win total of last year and now sports a season mark of 16-17 with a career record of 31-57.

Also wrestling for Hannibal over the weekend tournament were Bradyn Adkins, Will Bowen, Brandon Dillman, Kaleb Greening, Dalton Huffman, Andrew Jones, Gavin Scott, and Harry Vessell.

Vessell and Scott both won a pair of matches Saturday to join the 20 win club for Hannibal. Vessell is 21-15 this year while Scott is 20-19. Other two match winners included Greening and Jones. Greening picked up his 16th win while Jones got his 10th win of the season. Bowen and Brandon Dillman each won one match.

The Pirates will be back on the mats Thursday when they head south to Fort Zumwalt North.
