Ryan Cox made sure his kicking woes would be a minor footnote in Bowling Green history.
The Bobcats senior quarterback saw two of his kicks — an extra point and a field goal attempt — get blocked. As the game wore on the misses loomed larger as Bowling Green trailed Priory 7-6 at Busch Field in Creve Coeur, Mo. But Cox wasn’t about to let his high school career end because of a couple of blocked kicks.
With the Bobcats driving midway through the fourth quarter, Cox and the Bobcats saw a crack in the Rebels defense. All day long, the Priory had been playing its safeties deep to cut off the deep pass. The Rebels pinched in the safeties and Cox sent wideout Cody Spegal on a hot route to the end zone. With time, Cox dropped back and fired a strike to Spegal, hitting him in stride. Forty five yards later, Spegal was in the end zone and the Bobcats had their first lead of the game with 6:21 still showing on the clock.
“We finally got one where I saw they had a corners high on two-double high, so I signaled Cody to run a deep fly,” Cox said. “He then made a play on the ball. It was a great play by Cody.”
The touchdown gave new life to the Bobcats.
“That just two seniors who wanted to go to the Dome really bad,” Bowling Green head coach Jimmy Tucker said.
