Tom Schweich promises he’ll won’t let politics get in the way of good government.
The St. Louis Republican announced his candidacy for state auditor at stops around the state, including Hannibal.
“I’m a very independent-minded guy,” Schweich said. “I won’t be politically-motivated. What I will give is the independence (the office) deserves.”
Schweich brings a wealth of experiences to his candidacy. He’s been a corporate lawyer, federal prosecutor, U.S. State Department investigator and top staff member for United Nations ambassadors.
Schweich teaches at Washington University Law School and wrote the books “Protect Yourself From Business Lawsuits (and lawyers like me)” and “Crashproof Your Life: A Comprehensive Three-Part Plan for Avoiding Financial Disasters.”
The primary duty of the auditor’s office is to keep a financial eye on 200 state agencies, boards, commissions, courts and local governments.
Schweich calls himself a fiscal conservative and believes in strong oversight.
“I’ve got a lot of experience...in making sure the money is properly accounted for,” he said. “We need a tough, independent watchdog to look out for tax money.”
One other Republican, State Rep. Allen Icet of Wildwood, has announced his candidacy for state auditor.
Incumbent Democrat Susan Montee is expected to seek re-election for a second term.
