History came alive for a 9-year-old Hannibal girl on Friday. Why? Because she had the opportunity to meet a presidential candidate - Rick Santorum - during his campaign stop in America’s Hometown on Friday.
“I’m really excited,” said Eileen Shafer, who was clutching a homemade welcome sign while standing outside the Mark Twain Dinette which was Santorum’s first stop.
Why was Eileen excited?
“His children are homeschooled just like me,” she said.
Eileen was accompanied by her mother, Marie Shafer, who was counting the trip to see the candidate as a part of her daughter’s history curriculum.
“We do all kinds of things that are hands-on,” she said. “She’s also learning that it’s important to vote.”
While her daughter was receiving a civics lesson, Marie Shafer was learning more about a candidate she has positive vibes about.
“I’m liking more and more what I’m hearing about Rick Santorum,” she said.
Inside the dinette, 13-year-old Sadie Luckey of Hannibal, was smiling after shaking the candidate’s hand.
“I’m excited. I’d not met anyone as high up who is running for president,” said the student at Hannibal Christian Academy.
A table over, Jennifer Hawes of Hannibal had a digital camera in one hand and a video recorder in the other.
“This is wonderful,” she said. “It’s so great to come.”
Hawes was accompanied by two youngsters.
“It’s a great opportunity for them. They’ve not experienced anything like this,” she said.
Hawes is optimistic that Santorum’s campaign will continue to gain momentum.
“I hope we get a good Republican and conservative in office,” she said.
Tom (Christopher Wetton) and Becky (Jessica Taylor) were on hand to greet the candidate at the dinette.
“It was a very interesting opportunity that I’m grateful for,” said Christopher.
“It’s exciting,” added Jessica. “I’ll probably not meet someone like him again.”
Coming all the way from Bushnell, Ill., to see Santorum was Ken McClintock.
“It’s wonderful,” he said. “I followed Rick through Iowa. He went county to county seeking grassroots support. That’s why he won.”
