Thanks to drier weather, the hauling of dirt to the old YMCA site has begun. The final step in the demolition project will be covering the site with dirt and sprinkling it with grass seed.

The project
Demolition of the 100-year-old YMCA at Fifth and Center streets in Hannibal.

What’s
happening
Following a period of a few days with little to no precipitation, conditions were adequate to begin hauling in dirt to the old YMCA site on Tuesday.

What’s next
After an adequate amount of top soil has been put down grass seed will be spread over the lot.

Anticipated cost
Smashey & Sons Construction was the low bidder at $60,000.
Since small amounts of “non-friable” asbestos were found in the building there have been additional costs for the asbestos inspection, testing and to have an asbestos abatement supervisor on hand when areas containing asbestos were removed.
The cost of the asbestos inspection and testing was $1,390 and was paid to Klingner & Associates.
The city has acknowledged that it will be picking up additional asbestos-related costs.
Who’s paying
Although the building is privately owned, the city of Hannibal is paying to bring the structure down. That action was being taken since its owner, Pastor Clyde Beers, did not have the necessary funds to have it demolished. After a portion of the building fell inward, the structure was condemned last year.
City Manager Jeff LaGarce indicated that money for the project has been taken out of the city’s reserves.
Projected date for completion
of this project
The project’s contractor, Smashey & Sons Construction, has 45 days from Nov. 29, when the notice to proceed was issued, to complete the demolition. The initial completion date was Jan. 13, 2012. On Friday, Jan. 13, it was revealed that the deadline has been pushed back to Friday, Feb. 10. A second extension was agreed to last week.
“I only need a few more dry working days and we’ll be done,” said Smashey.
