Hundreds of people attended Wednesday’s funeral for Army Sgt. Brandon Maggart, but a Kansas church that had promised a protest did not show up.
Maggart, 24, was killed Aug. 22 when insurgents attacked his unit in Iraq. The casket was returned to Kirksville on Monday.
KHQA TV reported that hundreds of American and military flags lined the drive around Kirksville Middle School, where the funeral was held. More than 150 members of the Patriot Guard motorcycle riders from four states were on hand.
A Kansas church had said it would send members to protest outside the funeral. The church members have said the killing of soldiers is God’s punishment for America embracing homosexuality.
Maggart was laid to rest with honors at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville.
