On Saturday March 14, 2009, the Hannibal Jaycees teamed up with River City Billiards for the 2nd Annual Washers Tournament. For those of you who don’t quite understand, this is not a contest involving soap and water, but instead metal flat washers thrown at wooden boxes with a three-inch diameter PVC pipe in the middle. The game is played and scored similar to horseshoes.
The popularity of the game was shown at this year’s tournament by more than doubling the teams compared to the first year’s contest.
This year’s winners were Chad Culp and Darrell McCoy taking first place honors with Chase Dittmer and Jamie Buckman receiving the second place trophy. The event started at noon and lasted all day. Money was raised through entry fees, a 50/50 raffle, a pie auction, raffle drawings, food sales and a silent auction.
Keith Morris who won the 50/50 raffle donated his winnings back to the cause.
After the tournament, the band Antidote took the stage and played the remainder of the evening helping to raise money. All of the money raised, nearly $1,800, is being donated to the Ronald McDonald Family Room in the St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
The Hannibal Jaycees’ chairman for this year’s washers tournament were Sam and Missy Reed. They know all to well the importance of the Ronald McDonald Family Room. On the day their son Grady was born, he was premature and suffered from under-developed lungs and sepsis. He was life-flighted to the NICU at Barnes St. Louis Children’s Hospital where he stayed the next two weeks during which he spent most of that time on a ventilator helping him breathe, but Grady was never alone. Sam and Missy were able to stay by his side the entire time. In fact they never left the hospital until Grady was released.
The only way they were able to achieve this was with the help of the Ronald McDonald Family Room. The Family Room offers such things as snacks, drinks and personal care items such as soap, deodorant, toothpaste etc. It also provides a place to bathe, relax, sleep, and watch television. It also provides access to the internet, a life line to some, to pass along vital information back home as well as receive support and prayers from loved ones. On average the Family Room extends its services to 340 families a week. The Ronald McDonald Family Room offers all of this to families at no cost.
Today Grady is doing well with his mom and dad still by his side. They will never forget how important the Ronald McDonald Family Room was to them during a very trying time. Now they are helping to give back, along with many others who helped the second annual Washers Tournament become a great success for a great cause.
