What Hannibal dished out in the first game, Macon returned in the second, as the two teams split a doubleheader on Sunday.
Tyler Adams picked up the win and scored three times as the Hannibal Senior Legion took game one, 10-3. With his team nursing a one-run lead in the top of the fourth, Tylor Zerbonia gave Hannibal some breathing room with a three-run home run. Hannibal would add two more in both the sixth and seventh innings for Adams, who went the distance and struck out six. Colin Krigbaum would also add a pair of doubles and two RBI for Hannibal.
“I was very pleased with the way we came out and approached the first game. We were very fundamentally sound and we did an excellent job of putting the ball in play against a very good pitcher,” said Hannibal coach Blane Mundle. “Tyler Adams was outstanding on the mound, keeping Macon hitters off-balance with excellent control of his curve ball.”
In the second game, Macon would touch Hannibal starter Ian Hatton for a pair of first inning runs and then chase him from the game with a five-run third in an 11-1 five-inning win. Hannibal cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third when Luke Barton scored, but Macon responded in the bottom of the frame. Zach Nichols finished with three hits in the game for Hannibal.
“We put a slightly different line-up on the field in game two and made some errors due to being rusty as a result of all the rainouts,” said Mundle. “But Macon is one of the best, if not the best, team in our zone. They played a great ballgame.”
Hannibal (11-6) will host Macon at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Veterans Field in one nine-inning game, with the winner hosting the first round of district play at the end of July.
