The St. Jude run will begin in Hannibal again this summer. Planning has already begun and prospective participants and anyone with interest in the event is invited to a meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at the Hannibal YMCA.
The Quincy-to-Peoria run is in its eighth year, but it actually starts in Hannibal July 20 to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The run is conducted in a relay-type fashion with segments ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 miles. The runners are escorted by law enforcement officials and support vehicles.
Runners start Friday and run through the night relay-style to end up in Peoria Saturday afternoon, meeting up with runners from 26 other cities. The St. Jude runs have raised more than $25 million.
The emphasis is more on fund-raising than running. Each participate has to raise at least $750 to run to Peoria. Sponsors pay for all expenses so all the funds raised go directly to research, care and treatment of children at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., and its Midwest affiliate in Peoria.
