It’s getting closer.
After a long summer, the days of August are slowly but surely piling up. Soon the 2010 school year will being, and with that, the 2010 fall sports season.
Hannibal will be fielding seven teams for the fall. Right now, all seven teams are practicing under the summer sun in preparation for the upcoming season.
School starts Aug. 23, and so does the fall season.
Softball
The Lady Pirates softball team will kick things off with a busy first week of action. On Monday, Aug. 23, Hannibal will kick off the 2010 season with a North Central Missouri Conference game against Kirksville. The Lady Tigers will travel to Hannibal for a 5 p.m. game.
The next day, Tuesday, Hannibal will travel to Monroe City to take on the Lady Panthers. The game will also start at 5 p.m.
After a day off on Wednesday, Hannibal will host Boonville on Thursday for its third game of the opening week.
Girls’ tennis
Thursday , Aug. 26, will be the first day the Hannibal Lady Pirates tennis team will hit the courts.
In a NCMC match, the girls’ will take on Fulton High School
Football
The first game of the season won’t be a cakewalk for the football Pirates. This year, Hannibal begins a home-and-home non-conference series against Quincy Notre Dame. On Aug. 27, the Pirates will head to Quincy to kick off the season at 7:30 p.m.
The Pirates first home game will be the next Friday when the team hosts Farmington at 7 p.m.
Volleyball
The Lady Pirates’ volleyball team will have a full week of school before hitting the court.
Columbia-Hickman will be the first foe for the volleyball this fall. Hannibal will play the host for the 6 p.m. match on Aug. 31.
Boys’ soccer
For the second straight year, the boys’ soccer team will open the season with Quincy High School. After starting the year across the Mississippi River last year, Hannibal will host QHS at 7 p.m. on Thursday , Aug. 31.
Cross country
The cross country season will kick off with the Mexico Invitational on Sept. 4. Bright and early at 9 a.m., the runners will hit the course.
The first, an only, home meet of the season — the Frank Lemons Invitational — will take place on Thursday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m.
Boys’ swimming
Saturday may be a day of rest for some, but not for the boys’ swimming team. Hannibal will hit the pool for the first time on Saturday, Sept. 11 for the Ladue Invitational.
The first home meet of the year will take place ion Sept. 24. The Pirates will swim against Ritenour High School at 4 p.m.
