The third time was the charm for the Hannibal boys basketball team.
After starting the season 0-2, the Pirates picked up win No. 1 on Friday, beating Pleasant Hill 46-33 at the Pittsfield Tournament.
“We really needed it, especially for our young kids,” Hannibal head coach Matt Pugh said. “It’s nice to get that first one and they see that it can be done and hopefully we can build on that.”
Christian Williams led the red and black with 13 points and eight rebounds. Fellow post-player Paul Trenhaile picked up nine rebounds of his own to help the Pirates control the boards. The strong play on the glass helped Hannibal hold a team below 35 points for the first time this season.
“We rebounded the ball a lot better,” Pugh said. “We didn’t give up many offensive rebounds which hurt us in the previous two games which led to easy offensive looks for them.”
The Hannibal bench got a boost with the return of Mat Sims. After missing two games with a foot injury, Sims was back in action for Hannibal. He chipped in 10 points.
Pugh said the Pirates hit the gym early Friday to work on some things, most notably on the offensive end of the floor. The word paid off.
“I thought we were a lot more patient offensively,” Pugh said. “We still didn’t score as efficiently as we want to, ... but we were much more patient and got much better looks and better shots.”
The Pirates will be back in action again at 5 p.m. today against Payson High School (Ill.). Payson is 3-0.
