After 25 years of not playing each other, the Hannibal Pirates and the Quincy-Notre Dame Raiders will square off on the football field next season.
On Aug. 27, 2010, the Pirates will travel across the Mississippi River for a season-opening tilt with the Raiders at QND. The freshmen squads for both schools will start the action off with a game at 5 p.m.
The main event will kick off at 7:30 p.m. when the two varsity teams take the field.
The junior varsity teams will match up the following Monday, Aug. 30, with Quincy making the trip to Porter Stadium.
Hannibal activities director John Daniels said the matchup was one that had been in the works for a while.
“Coach St Clair, one of our assistants and myself made some contact with [QND] and they were able to get this game going,” Daniels said. “Two years ago, when we got our district assignment, their schedule was full and it wouldn’t work. This year, we just managed to get things squared away before they released the district.”
The benefits of the game go further than just an opportunity to revive an old rivalry for both teams. As Hannibal head football coach Mark St Clair explained, it also makes sense from a logistics standpoint.
“This is a game that is 20 miles away for either community,” St Clair said. “Hopefully, it will be a long-standing deal because we have two good programs and we might as well be playing each other.”
In 2011, the teams will switch home fields. On Aug. 26, 2011 Hannibal will welcome Quincy to Porter Stadium for a freshman and varsity game. The freshman will play at 5 p.m. and the varsity will follow at 7:30 p.m. The JV teams will play Monday, Aug. 29, in Quincy.
The two schools played 20 times from 1965 to 1985 when QND was the Quincy Christian Brothers. Hannibal led the series with 12 wins to Quincy’s eight.
