In two cities in two different gyms, Mark Twain picked up two different wins.

With girls at home hosting Silex, the boys headed to Clopton of Friday night. Both were able to come away with victories.

The Mark Twain boys survived a scare on the road.

The Tigers headed to Clopton to take on the win-less Hawks. Mark Twain led the entire game, but the Hawks proved to be a feisty bunch and pulled the game to within one point late in the game. The Tigers were able to hit some late free throws.

“We knew it would be a dogfight down at their place,” Mark Twain head coach Greg Gatson said. “Clopton has a proud tradition.”

Mark Twain outscored the Hawks in the first three quarters before the Hawks made the game close. The hot start helped stave off Clopton and  helped the Tigers improve to 6-1.

Once again, the Tigers had a balanced offensive attack. Three players reached double-digits in points for the Mark Twain boys. David Stark had the most with 11 points, but Jared Runyon and Nathan Jones were right behind him with 10 points apiece.

“My guys gave a good, strong effort,” Gatson said.

The boys will have a few weeks off now before retuning to action. The next time they will take the floor for a game will be Jan. 2, 2010, against New Haven. The game will be on the road.

With the boys on the road, the girls had the Mark Twain gym to themselves. Taking on Silex, Mark Twain won 56-36.

Deidra Jarman led all Lady Tigers with 24 points. Kristen Hamilton, the hero of Monday night’s win against Canton, chipped in 10 points to help beat the Lady Owls.

The win was the second in three games this week for the the Lady Tigers. After beating Canton on Monday, Mark Twain dropped a game to Clark County on the road. The girls head coach Adria Palmer was happy with how her team bounced back from the loss.

“The girls played really well and I was really impressed with the fact that they did play well, especially coming off that Clark County loss.”

With the win, the Lady tigers are now 5-2.

The win is the last game of 2009 for the Lady Tigers as they head into the a mid-season break.

“You always want to go into the break with a win,” Palmer said.

The Mark Twain girls will be back in action Jan. 5, 2010, at home against North Callaway.
